Some improvised music thrives on chance meetings, fueled by the energy that comes from first encounters. Other improvised music simmers. It develops through slow and sustained work between close friends, charged by the need to uncover something mutually important. Go! falls into this category.

Go! is an improvising duo that was formed in 2004 by Mahlon Hoard on Saxophones and Pat Lawrence on acoustic bass/live electronics. Combining the elements of improvisation, pop music, experimental noise and free jazz, Mahlon and Pat are developing a versatile and dynamic sound that is at once engaging and hauntingly familiar. The elements of melody, harmony, and rhythm move freely through their landscape of sounds that flow from intricate and subtle to nothing less than sonic mayhem.

Go! is based in North Carolina and spends the better part of its performance schedule on the road playing shows from Chicago to Atlanta and various spots along the east coast. Shows have included Eugene Chadbourne, Dave Rempis and his percussion quartet with Tim Daisy and Frank Rosaly, and also the duo of Mary Halvorson and Jessica Pavone from Brooklyn. They are also actively involved in seeking out collaborations with other musicians that expand and deepen their sound as a duo. Most recently performing with Tim Mulvenna, former drummer for the Vandermark 5, in Chicago.

Mahlon Howard was raised in South Carolina and started down the path of music at an early age. Like many of his time, he was strongly influenced by the music of the Beatles and many pop/R&B artists. He began his musical studies on the trumpet at the age of 11. His older brother Bobby, who was a drummer of note in the area, encouraged him to sit in with his bands. At the age of 15, Mahlon switched to saxophone and later went on to study jazz at the University of North Texas. From there, he moved to Los Angeles where he met Bob Shepard and Charlie Shoemake. It was at Charlie’s house that Mahlon met Adam Holzman, Miles Davis’ sideman and eventual music director. Mahlon and Adam formed a fusion inspired group The Bugs that played and recorded regularly in the area.

Mahlon was eventually drawn to New York City where he played with many noted musicians including James Genus, Zach Danzinger, Rodney Holmes, Tim LeFevbre, and his old friend Adam Holzman. After playing in New York for several years, Mahlon caught the attention of Matt “Guitar” Murphy and went on tour with him. In 1999 Mahlon relocated to North Carolina and is very much in demand as a studio musician and live performer. His most recent projects have delved deeper into the free improvisation world, which led to him co-founding the improvising duo Go!

Pat Lawrence was born and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana and at the age of 14 began playing the acoustic bass. In due course, he found his way to Chicago where he lived for 9 years immersed in its musical world. His primary teachers were Larry Gray (Ramsey Lewis Trio) and Steven Lester (Chicago Symphony Orchestra). During this time, Pat was very active in jazz and maintained interests in classical music. He won an audition and came to play with the Chicago Civic Orchestra under such conductors as Daniel Barenboim and Zubin Mehta. It was in the Orchestra’s performance of New Music, under the influence of Pierre Boulez, that Pat’s ears were opened to the vast possibilities of improvisation. Fortunately, Chicago has a diverse and varied musical landscape which allowed him to explore improvisation with many of the area’s best musicians, including Jim O’Rourke, Guillermo Gregorio, Tim Mulvenna, Fred Lonberg-holm, Kevin Drumm, and Gene Coleman.

After relocating to North Carolina, Pat has worked in a variety of styles including classical, bluegrass, rock, and jazz. He has been able to integrate these styles in his improvisational work with Eugene Chadbourne, Dave Fox, and the improvising duo Go!.
